After dark the Shala is lit low, the mats and bolsters are laid out, and the insects outside are louder than anything inside. One gong, seven bowls, and a voice when it is needed.
Forty minutes of sound, twenty of silence, and nobody speaks until you leave. You do not have to believe anything for it to work, sustained sound with no melody gives attention nothing to hold, and the body drops into the state just before sleep.
Most people lose the thread in the first ten minutes and come back when the sound stops. Then they sleep ten hours. Whatever you want to call that, it is the most reliable thing on our schedule.
