Sound healing gong beside rolled yoga mats in the Shala

Sound healing, explained without the mysticism

What a gong session is, what it isn't, and why people sleep afterwards.

A sound session is forty minutes of lying still while somebody plays a large gong and a set of bowls a few metres from your head. That is the whole mechanism.

You do not have to believe anything for it to work, and nobody here will tell you it realigns your cells.

Why it does something anyway

Sustained, low, unpredictable sound with no melody gives the listening part of your brain nothing to track. Attention drifts, breathing slows, and the body drops into the state just before sleep.

Most people lose the thread somewhere in the first ten minutes and come back when the sound stops. That gap is the point.

What to expect in our Shala

After dark, mats and bolsters laid out, insects outside, one gong and seven bowls. Twenty minutes of silence at the end, and nobody speaks until you leave.

Then almost everyone sleeps ten hours. Whatever you want to call that, it is the most reliable thing on our schedule.
